Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund

The plan still needs approval from the company's stockholders.

Confirmed

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude super intelligence (SI) system, has committed 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund. The company announced the plan on Sunday, United States time. That was early Monday in Australia. The plan still needs approval from Anthropic's stockholders, Reuters reported. Anthropic said its board could add another 2% of shares for every 50% rise in the company's value above a set starting point. That starting point has not been made public. The fund will be set up as a company owned by Anthropic. It will not be a charity. Anthropic said none of the shares would be used for lobbying or political donations. The company says that, when earlier pledges by its co-founders and staff are added in, roughly 20% of its shares will go towards the public good. That figure is Anthropic's own. It is not yet known exactly what the fund will pay for, or when. SI companies are now worth huge sums, so the promise could add up to a lot of money.
