A month's rent on a Dover Heights house now costs more than a year's rent on a Broken Hill unit

Domain's latest Rent Report shows a huge gap between Australia's priciest and cheapest places to rent.

Confirmed

A month's rent on a house in Dover Heights, in Sydney's east, now costs more than a whole year's rent on a unit in Broken Hill. That is according to Domain's latest Rent Report, released this week. The typical asking rent for a house in Dover Heights is $3,500 a week. That is up 29.6% in a year, and up 75% in five years. In Broken Hill, in far west New South Wales, the typical asking rent for a unit is $260 a week. Domain says tenants in the most expensive suburbs now pay about $60,000 a year more than they did five years ago. Across the country, the picture was calmer in the September quarter. House rents fell slightly in Sydney and Canberra, Domain said. They were flat in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Unit rents rose 1.5% across Australia. These figures are what landlords are asking for, not what tenants actually end up paying. Rent is the biggest bill for many households.
