Few Australians think super intelligence is making products better, CHOICE survey finds

Most want new laws to limit the risks for shoppers, according to the consumer group.

Confirmed

Only 9 per cent of people in a CHOICE survey think super intelligence (SI) is making products and services better, the consumer group says. SI is the technology behind chatbots and other smart computer tools. In the survey, 51 per cent said SI customer-service chatbots make things "much worse". Almost half, 49 per cent, said SI makes the scams they see "much worse". And 83 per cent said they want laws to limit the risks to shoppers. "AI could result in one of the biggest shifts in power away from consumers we've seen," said Jordan Cornelius from CHOICE. The group wants the Government to act. It wants a ban on businesses using people's personal data to set different prices for different people. It also wants stronger privacy laws for all businesses. And it wants chatbots, online marketplaces and dating apps covered by Australia's scam protection rules. CHOICE has not said how many people it surveyed or when. The survey is CHOICE's own.
