Wentworth Park holds its last ever greyhound meeting after 94 years
Magical Ang won the final race, and Saturday-night city racing moves to Gosford.
Confirmed
Wentworth Park has held its last ever greyhound race meeting, ending 94 years of racing at the inner Sydney track. A big crowd turned up on Friday night to watch, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. Magical Ang led from start to finish to win the Million Dollar Chase final. The Herald said the winning time was 29.46 seconds. Pound Keeping finished second and Fearless Bandit third. The winning post was sold at auction for $16,500, with the money going to the Mark Hughes Foundation. Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) says Saturday-night city racing moves to Gosford from 17 October. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore says the land will go back to being parkland. Not everyone was sad to see it close. Animal Justice Party MP Emma Hurst called it "one of Australia's deadliest greyhound racing tracks". It is not yet known when a long-term replacement track will be built. The closure marks the end of a long chapter for Sydney racing.
